Measurement widget

The Measurement widget in 3D apps allows you to measure horizontal, vertical, and direct distance between two points as well as the area and perimeter of a polygon.

Note:

In a WGS84 or Web Mercator scene, when the distance between the points is more than 100 kilometers, the Measurement widget switches to display only the horizontal and vertical distances, taking into consideration the curvature of the earth (that is, ellipsoid-based geodesic distance).

Configure the Measurement widget

This widget can be set to open automatically when an app starts. Hover over the widget and click the Do not open this widget when the app starts button Do not open this widget when the app starts to change the setting to Open this widget automatically when the app starts. (For widgets that you need to add to the app first, you can turn on this option after configuring the widget.)

  1. Hover over the widget and click the Configure this widget button Configure this widget to open the configuration window.
    Note:

If you need to add the widget to the app first, click a widget placeholder on the Widget tab. In the Choose Widget window that opens, select the widget and click OK.

  2. The configuration window for this widget appears. The Default length unit and Default area unit parameters allow you to configure the default unit of the measurement.

You can also decide which measurement tool will be available in the widget. Choose Area or Distance.

  3. Click OK to close the window when you're finished.

Use the Measurement widget

To use the widget, click the Measurement widget icon to open it. Follow the steps below when measuring distance or area and perimeter.

Distance measurement

  1. Click the Distance tool to activate distance measurement.
  2. Start to measure by clicking in the scene to place your first point.

A horizontal laser line is drawn to indicate the height at the current pointer position. This line can help in analyzing the heights of objects relative to each other and the terrain. A second laser line shows the intersection of the scene with the vertical plane that passes through the checkered line.

The widget labels the direct, horizontal, and vertical orange distance lines and displays the same values in the UI panel.

  3. Optionally start a new measure by clicking the New Measure button on the widget.

Area and perimeter measurement

  1. Click the Area tool to activate area and perimeter measurement.
  2. Start to measure by clicking in the scene to place your first point.

When starting the area measurement, a horizontal laser line is drawn that indicates the height at the current pointer position. This line can help in analyzing the heights of objects relative to each other and the terrain.

  3. Optionally start a new measure by clicking the New Measure button on the widget.
